Texas Handgun Association offers two types of memberships: Individual and Corporate. Individual membership in the Texas Handgun Association is open to anyone who is not prohibited from purchasing a handgun in the U.S. Corporate membership is open to any company, business, or association, which can be aligned with the mission and vision of the Texas Handgun Association.

The Texas Handgun Association began as the Texas Concealed Handgun Instructor Association in 1997, one year after the Texas concealed handgun law, now the license to carry (LTC) law, went into effect. In 2003, the association expanded its membership to include license holders and anyone interested in carrying a handgun for self defense and changed its name to the Texas Concealed Handgun Association and in 2019, the members changed the name again to Texas Handgun Association, recognizing the open carry option.
